Chair Design Informatics
Chair Design Informatics
Profile
The chair Design Informatics aims in her research and education activities at the application of Information, Communication and Knowledge Technology (ICKT) throughout the entire domain of architectural design, with particular emphasis on the domain of building technology. The chair bridges between the hard aspects of informatics and technology and the soft aspects of design and creativity. It also deals with both monodisciplinary and multidisciplinary education and research.
Mission
The chair Design Informatics desires to educate architectural engineers who in the building sector excel in the field of Informatics and propel this sector into the future; it desires to continuously develop the field of Design Informatics for Architecture resulting in innovations in the field of design and materialisation processes; and it finally wants to take a leading position in the field of Architectural Design Informatics on a national and international level.
Education
The objective regarding the education activities of the chair is to present BSc students with a solid base concerning the use of ICKT within the architectural domain, to provide MSc students with opportunities to extend and implement this knowledge and expertise, and to ensure that they are able to develop themselves in their future career using private study. Four particular application areas are discerned:
- modelling and prototyping for design and materialisation;
- presenting and simulating, audio-visually and interactively;
- parametric modelling and scripting for generation and simulation;
- data, information and knowledge processing ("intelligent modelling").
The outcomes of research projects are evaluated and put into practise through education. This results in a continuous evolution of the curriculum based upon new knowledge, insights and applications of ICKT in the design domain, from MSc to BSc.
The chair contributes to the MSc track Building Technology with a focus on the specialisation Computation & Performance in the third and fourth MSc semester. The chair also chairs the joint international MSc program Computational Architecture in close co-operation with the department of Architecture of the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. Besides, the chair also develops international "collaborative design studios" and has expertise in the application of e-learning.
Research
The research of the chair Design Informatics focusses mainly on the processing and managing of information and knowledge in the multidisciplinary context of architectural design and materialisation using ICKT. The research targets both the more fundamental domains of technologies, methods and systems that can widely be used, and the more specific and practical domains of tools, techniques and applications that can be used within a particular context. Within the current research portfolio of the department Building Technology, the chair has a strong contribution in the research program Computation & Performance in which it cooperates with the chairs Structural Design, Structural Mechanics, Architectural Engineering, Hyperbody and the BEMNext Lab of the faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences. The research of the chair can be categorised according to the following themes:
- Performative Design Computation
Advanced modeling and prototyping techniques for performative and creative design, materialization and industrialization in the building sector. - Modeling for Smart Environments
Information modeling for eco-city design and planning
