Profile

Structural mechanics: statics, stength of materials and numerical modelling for determining the structural behaviour and the strenght, stiffness and stability of structures within the architectural and civil engineering domain. At the faculty of Civiel Engineering the chair is embedded in the section Structural Mechanics and the department Design & Construction. At the faculty of Architecture the chair is embedded in the department Building Technology.  

Mission

Mission: Form follows Force. Specialisation: Finite Element Modelling for structures in Civil Engineering and Architecture.

Education

At Civil Engineering, the chair is involved in education within the track Structural Engineering, with subtracks Structural Mechanics, Structural Design, Buildings, Concrete, Steel and Timber. At Architecture the chair is involved in education within the track Building Technology.

Research

The research within the chair Structural Mechanics focusses on research into, development of, validation of and application of numerical and analytical models for predicting the failure and deformation behaviour of structures. Topical fields of attention are: Constitutive models and computation schemes for crack formation and other non-lineair behaviour, searching for robustness of the predictions; damage due to settlement of the (historic) buildings resulting from sub surface building activities (like the construction of the North-South metro line in Amsterdam); structural glass, development, testing and modelling of glass beams and columns; physical models for obtaining insights into structural action; structural mechanics of complex free shapes, blobs; structural optimisation in the a design context; mechanics of concrete among which the modelling of shear failure of bridges; mechanics of masonry and of innovative sand-lime stone; mechanics of cardboard. The research of the chair Structural Mechanics is part of the Computation and Performance research program within the department Building Technology.
