Research

Environmental research is rooted in urban ecology and environment-behaviour sciences (including cognitive sciences). The approach is a transdisciplinar one; seeing practice as a source for research and clarifying the mutual relation between design and research. With this approach the chair will contribute to (design) methodology. The validation of theory and methodology includes research by design projects concentrating on human well-being, nature, spatial quality and climate change. This research agenda is in line with EU programmes.

The research projects are part of the U-lab subprogram of Urbanism. The aim for enriching combinations of the given elements and the transdisciplinary approach makes it logical to be part of different sub-programs of the U-Lab. In all the four sub-programs of the U-Lab the chair of Environmental Technology & Design has a specific contribution to make:

Urban Delta’s

From the ETD chair several staff members contribute to the sustainable delta from a technical approach. The focus is Urban Ecology.

Metropolitan network design

From an international context, two of the scholarship funded ETD PhD students will participate in this program. The focus is on the metabolism of the region, constituting on mobility.

Metropolitan metabolism

One of our researchers and a Phd student will contribute to this program that will be executed in relation to the Landscape chair and the chair of Climate Design and Sustainability (Building Technology). The focus will be on the relation between the implementation of sustainable energy (by different sources) drinking water production, waste management, mobility and the implication on urban and landscape design.

Design Methods and support systems

This sub-program has a specific role in the U-Lab for its goal to combine different methods and techniques that may be used by the other sub-programs. With this approach this sub-program comes close to the role of this chair and the overall goal of research programs of Urbanism; working towards a more integrated ‘urbanism approach’. An associate professor, a researcher and two PhD-students (of which one is based in the chair of Climate Design and Sustainability) will be part of this program. Research by design will be operationalized for the whole department. In relation to this is the development and testing of design strategies and techniques, rooted in a cognitive approach to design.

Next to the contribution to the U-Lab, there will be space for research related to the core aspect of the chair in the fields of biodiversity and environment-behaviour interaction (e.g. health).
