Title: Integrating Vulnerability Analysis with Spatial Planning on the Reduction of Urban Climate Risk

Abstract:

The lives and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people will be affected by what is done (or not done) in urban areas in regard to climate change over the next 5–40 years. The urban areas are more sensitive to these impacts because of the dense of population and activities. Inappropriate planning and legislation can exacerbate their vulnerability. Therefore, the issue of disaster planning of urban area is becoming more important and applying spatial planning as the tool of adaptation for the impact of climate change has been a major trend. What is the vulnerability of urban systems to climate change in Taiwan and in European countries? How can urban spatial planning and cross-sector policy-making be harmonized to adapt to? The research will distinguish the climate disaster risk in the urban areas and suggest how to adjust the policy and the role of spatial planning for future mitigation as well as adaptation measures.
