Europan 2011 winners: former Urbanism students
For Europan 2011, there were 1826 projects submitted for 49 sites in 17 different European countries. The team formed by Justina Muliuolyte, Tadas Jonauskis (urbanists) and Lukas Rekevičius (architect) was one of 41 winning teams. Justina and Tadas are both former students of the graduation studio Complex Cities of the master track Urbanism of the Architecture faculty TU Delft. They won the prize with their proposal 'Multitalented City'.
Multitalented City
'Multitalented City' is a proposal for a single-function modernist 1960s university complex on the edge of Reims, in France. An introvert and disconnected campus with large open spaces, isolated from its surroundings. The project proposes to transform the campus into a district largely able to be self-sustainable. The central concept is flexibility and adaptation to changes: environmental, societal and economic. Apart from that, the designers foresee solutions that may help the neighborhood produce its own energy.
Public spaces as a backbone
Pedestrian routes into a continuous public space network integrate five distinctive squares. A consistent public space structure brings clarity and spatial organization to the site. The five squares guide users through the sequence of unique places. Different program clusters are created around the squares. They are filled with diverse typologies and functions to strengthen the unique character of each square. All these functions are bond by an effective mobility system. Creating conditions to use sustainable forms of transport is an important objective of the strategy. Bicycle and pedestrian routes are main tools to connect the squares and link them to the immediate surroundings. Public transport is spatially embedded into the squares.
Conceptual and programmatic clarity
According to the jury, the project has a “great conceptual and programmatic clarity.” The jury appreciated the way in which alternative and new lifestyles are contemplated by the plan. According to the assessing panel, the “size and scale of the proposed public spaces are the strengths of the project. The project is both realistic and highly original”.
